Dear sir/madam,

I am writing to express my extreme dissatisfaction with the laptop (model: ZX 500, order no. 784512) that I purchased from your online store on 10th November 2025. The item was delivered on 15th November, but it has several serious defects that make it completely unusable.

Firstly, the laptop overheats within 10 minutes of use and automatically shuts down, even when performing basic tasks such as browsing the internet. Secondly, the battery lasts less than 30 minutes despite being advertised as having an 8 hour battery life. Most disappointingly, the keyboard has three missing keys, which I noticed only after removing the protective packaging.

I have attempted to contact your customer service department three times by phone and twice by email over the past week, but I have received no response. This lack of support has caused me considerable inconvenience, as I rely on this device for my university studies and part time work. Under consumer protection laws, I am entitled to a full refund or an immediate replacement with a brand-new, fault-free unit. I request that you arrange collection of the defective laptop at your expense and process a complete refund within the next seven days.

I look forward to your prompt reply and resolution of this matter.

Yours faithfully,
Anna Koju

The Editor,
XYZ Online, Kathmandu

Being a Nepali student and getting in touch with something related to our work and history is always fascinating and moving, especially when you are far from home for study or work ('How two students built Kathmandu's water pipelines and laid its roads', June 12 and 13, Online).

I came in touch with the news form the paper's official site and found myself overwhelmed when I read something so deeply researched about the overseas students and how they were related to Nepal. It is very rare when someone touches the matter of neglected, minority groups and presents it with true facts and astute research. The newspaper's Education and Contribution section and the reporters have done a commendable job.

Newspapers play an important role in spreading messages to their readers - much more than people realise. With the volume of countless readers, this esteemed newspaper has, it is indeed exciting for us to have the contributions of overseas students recognised in our country since it was highly relevant regarding the identity issues that we face when we walk along the streets of Kathmandu. Even today, we are chased by curious questions about who we are, and about whether we are from the bordering country. Although we are Nepali, we are oftentimes asked about how we came to learn the national language by judging the colour of our skin.

This has been much appreciated, and I hope that you give steadiness to issues and stories usually side-lined - so that ignored contributions within Nepal like ours can be acknowledged by all.

In ancient Greece, there lived a man called Tantalus. He was half man and half god. His father was the great Greek god Zeus. One day, Zeus invited him up to Mount Olympus, high above the clouds for dinner. When Tantalus received the invitation, he was very proud. "Dinner with gods!" he thought. "What a grand honour!" said Tantalus and climbed up to the very top of Mount Olympus in his embroidered robes to dine with his father and other gods. They had an exquisite dinner together. The next morning, Tantalus lay in bed remembering the glorious evening. "I must return the invitation." "But what can I serve them? I must give them something I value more than anything." And then, Tantalus had a terrible idea, a horrible one. He decided to take his son, Pelops, and chop him up and serve him as a stew to the gods. The gods, who saw everything, were furious. The deadliest virus in modern history, perhaps of all time, was the 1918 Spanish Flu. It killed about 20 to 50 million people worldwide, perhaps more. The total death toll is unknown because medical records were not kept in many areas.

The pandemic hit during World War I and devastated military troops. In the United States, for instance, more servicemen were killed from the flu than from the war itself. The Spanish flu was fatal to a higher proportion of young adults than most flu viruses.

The pandemic started mildly, in the spring of 1918, but was followed by a much more severe wave in the fall of 1918. The war likely contributed to the devastating mortality numbers, as large outbreaks occurred in military forces living in close quarters. Poor nutrition and the unsanitary conditions of war camps had an effect.

A third wave occurred in the winter and spring of 1919, and a fourth, smaller wave occurred in a few areas in spring 1920. Initial symptoms of the flu were typical: sore throat, headache, and fever. The flu often progressed rapidly to cause severe pneumonia and sometimes hemorrhage in the lungs and mucus membranes. A characteristic feature of severe cases of the Spanish Flu was heliotrope cyanosis, where the patient's face turned blue from lack of oxygen in the cells. Death usually followed within hours or days.

Modern medicine such as vaccines, antivirals, and antibiotics for secondary infections were not available at that time, so medical personnel couldn't do much more than try to relieve symptoms.

The flu ended when it had infected enough people that those who were susceptible had either died or developed immunity.

Health experts get tough on school lunches

It's lunchtime at Hall Memorial School in Connecticut, and 10 year old Haley is making her way through the food line. Many of her friends are thrilled with the day's lunch selections: pizza and French fries and hot dogs. But Haley feels discouraged. "I use four or five napkins just trying to get the grease off the pizza," she says. "Where are the healthy options?"

Health experts are asking the same question. They say foods high in fat, salt and sugar should be banned from school lunch programs. This includes some items you might not suspect, like fruit punch, which is loaded with sugar, and macaroni and cheese, which is sky-high in fat and salt. "Children are already consuming too much junk food," says Jen Keller, a dietitian at the Physician's Committee for Responsible Medicine. "It's important to offer them only healthy items in school."

It's not that health experts want to deprive kids of foods they like best. They just want to help kids avoid many of the health problems that come with eating large quantities of unhealthful food. Today, 15 percent of children ages 6 to 11 are obese or seriously overweight. That's up from just 6.5 percent in the late 1970s. Poor diet and obesity can cause diseases like type - 2 diabetes, which can lead to blindness and kidney problems. As of a few years ago, this disease was so rare in children that it was called "adult onset diabetes." "Many foods that are offered in cafeterias are linked to these problems," Keller says.

Most schools do offer some healthful foods, but experts say that doesn't solve the problem. "Given a choice, most kids are going to choose junk over something healthy," says Pat Thorton, a psychologist who studies obesity in children. Throton and other experts agree that schools and parents need to educate kids about making good food choices, both in and out of school.

A. Write 'TRUE' for true and 'FALSE' for the false statements. (5×1=5)

(i) Haley found the pizza in the school lunch too oily.

(ii) Fruit punch is a hygienic food.

(iii) Obesity can cause type 2 diabetes.

(iv) Most foods at school cafeteria are healthy.

(i) feeling or showing great excitement and pleasure(a) obesity
(ii) feeling less confident(b) punch
(iii) a drink made by mixing water, fruit, juice and spices(c) dietitian
(iv) A person who advises people about healthy food habits(d) expert
(v) the fact of being fat in an unhealthy way(e) discouraged
(f) thrilled

C. Answer the following questions. (5×1=5)

(i) Who are thrilled with the day's lunch selection?

(ii) According to experts, what kind of foods should be banned from schools?

(iii) what can be the cause of blindness and kidney problems?

Many chronic conditions such as cancer, neurological and mental disorders, cardiovascular diseases, obesity and type 2 diabetes can be prevented or modified through better lifestyles and healthier diets. Many projects are delivering insights such as how diabetes and obesity can be prevented, how they progress, how early diagnosis can improve quality of life, and how to select the best treatments.

But despite the improvements, much more needs to be done, particularly because of the trans-generational effects of obesity and diabetes.

Horizon 2020, Europe's 80 billion euro research and innovation programme, is designed to tackle society's biggest challenges.

The two things that are most relevant to 'A Healthy Diet for A Healthy Life' are food safety and the bioeconomy, and health, demographic change and wellbeing.

For the next seven years, these challenges will fund the very best research on nutrition, health, diet-related disease and ageing and translate the knowledge gained into innovative and effective products, treatments, services and strategies to benefit all patients, and to prevent many people from developing disease in the first place.

It will require an unprecedented level of cooperation along the healthcare innovation chain, starting with researchers that characterise diseases, to those who use this knowledge by developing new biomarkers, diagnostics and medicines and to regulators who evaluate and approve them.

I. Cardiovascular diseases are not chronic diseases.

Hi, Carla!
While talking to Dad about our family history, I've found interesting things about his brother, our Uncle Jack.
Jack left school at 16 in 1848 and worked in a car factory in Newcastle for five years. He used to play football for the factory team there. One day, some men came to watch him from Newcastle United. They offered him a contract, so in 1953, Jack left for his new team apparently, he played for Newcastle United from 1953 until 1959 and scored over 100 goals. However, he broke his leg badly in 1959 and gave up playing football.
After that, he got a job as a sports teacher at a local school, and that's where he met his wife, Auntie Giulia. She was an art teacher. They fell in love and got married in 1961. As you know, we left Great Britain and came to live here in Australia in 1965, so it was quite difficult for Dad and Uncle Jack to keep in touch after that.
Meanwhile, in 1969, Uncle Jack and Auntie Giulia opened an Italian restaurant in the centre of Newcastle. It was the most popular restaurant in the city during the 1970s and 80s. Sadly, in 1992, Uncle Jack was killed in a car crash, and the restaurant had to be sold. If I find anything new, I will certainly share with you.

Leave this chanting and singing and telling of beads!
Whom dost thou worship in this lonely dark corner of a temple with doors all shut?
Open thine eyes and see thy God is not before thee!
He is there where the tiller is tilling the hard ground
and where the pathmaker is breaking stones.
He is with them in sun and in shower,
and his garment is covered with dust.
Put off thy holy mantle and even like him come down on the dusty soil!
Deliverance?
Where is this deliverance to be found?
Our master himself has joyfully taken upon him the bonds of creation;

The most memorable day of my life was when our class organized a science exhibition at school. The event was held on February 2, 2024, and students from classes 6 to 10 took part. I worked on a project called "Water Purification Using Natural Materials." I used sand, gravel, and charcoal layers to build a working model that could clean muddy water. I tested the model three times before the exhibition and recorded the results carefully.

On the exhibition day, there were more than thirty-five models displayed in the hall. Around five hundred visitors, including students, parents, and teachers, came to see our work. I explained my model to the judges and showed how clear water came out after passing through the filter. One of the judges, a science professor from the local college, asked me about the cost of the model, and I told him it cost less than Rs.100 to make. He appreciated the simplicity and encouraged me to present it again at the district-level fair.

Later, the principal announced that my model had won the second prize. My friends clapped and lifted me up in celebration. The prize included a certificate, a science kit, and a medal. That day, I learned how experiments can help solve real-world problems. I realised that science is not only about books but also about creativity and observation. My teacher told me that such practical work improves logical thinking and confidence.

I felt proud that my idea could be useful for people who don't have access to clean water. That exhibition changed my attitude toward learning and inspired me to become an engineer in the future. It will always remain one of the happiest and most inspiring days of my life.

You might think that you need to boil liquid water to create water vapour—but you do not. You just need some liquid water at room temperature. Picture a glass of water. If you could zoom in with super vision (not actually possible), you would see that this water is made of a bunch of molecules—water molecules. Although these molecules are themselves made of three atoms: two hydrogens and one oxygen. Let's just think of them as tiny balls.

These tiny water balls are moving around in the water but stay fairly close to their ball neighbours. This motion isn't due to currents in the water, instead this is thermal motion. Imagine these tiny balls jiggling around in a giant collection of balls. The hotter the water, the greater the motion of these water balls. But wait! The speeds of the water particles are not all the same. Although there is an average ball speed, some are going faster and some are going slower. It's just like the height of a group of adult humans. There is an average height, but everyone is not the same. Some people are very tall, but that's just a small fraction of the total group.

2.1 Write 'TRUE' for true statements and 'FALSE' for the false ones. (5×1=5)

I. The author claims that water vapour is formed only at boiling temperature.

II. Water molecules are easily visible.

III. Water molecules are taken as tiny water balls in the text.

IV. The tiny water balls move at the same speed.

V. Average height means all the people are of the same height.

2.2 Answer the following questions. (5×1=5)

I. What are water molecules made up of?

II. What is the cause of the movement of water particles in room temperature?

III. How does heat affect the movement of water particles?

IV. What is done to measure the movement of molecules?

V. Why does the author compare the speed of water particles to the heights of adult humans?

Teaching is not an easy job. In addition, when it comes to teaching science, it becomes more tiresome. Different teaching methodologies, including ICT, plus more investment in terms of money and time are needed to get satisfactory output. Science is a subject of curiosity, inquisitiveness and questioning. There are many sub-branches of science. Even at the secondary level, four major branches of science - physics, chemistry, biology and astronomy are incorporated. These four make up the basics of all sciences. Moreover, these fields are completely independent and unconnected.

Then how come a single teacher at the secondary level, especially in community schools and many English medium private schools, is teaching all these subjects when one has mastered only one field? For better output, individual teachers should be managed, especially at the secondary level, to teach these subjects.

Only lectures and discussion methods are not sufficient to make the students understand the scientific concepts. Laboratory experiments, field visits, project work too are essential ingredients of science study. The essence of teaching science is not only to make students learn by heart the definitions of work, energy, cell, Newton's law of motion, light year and the like, but also to make them able to use them in the laboratory research centre and medical and engineering sectors.

Therefore, instead of making science a mandatory subject, it must be made elective from the very beginning, that is, after the primary level so that only those students who are truly interested and have the capacity and confidence to grab the concepts in this field can pursue it. We have seen many students pursuing science in classes 11 and 12, however, they seem to be confused about where they are heading. Therefore, teachers as well as the parents should counsel them in choosing the right path and mustn't force them to choose science even if they manage to grab a high GPA.

4.1 Match the meanings in Column A with the correct words given in Column B. One word does not have a match. (5×1=5)

Column AColumn B
I. central character of somethingA. investment

I. What type of text is it?
A. news story
B. newspaper article
C. notice
D. review

II. What is required for effective teaching of Science?
A. modern teaching methods and more investment
B. lectures and discussion methods
C. definitions of scientific terms
D. students having high GPA

III. Which of the following is one of the major branches of Science?
A. ICT
B. laboratory
C. engineering
D. physics

IV. According to the writer, from which class should science be made optional?
A. in all classes
B. below class six
C. after class five
D. from class eleven

V. Which of the following should be the basis for students to choose science to study?
A. teacher's advice
B. parent's force
C. their interest
D. obtained GPA

4.3 Write 'TRUE' for true statements and 'FALSE' for the false ones. (5×1=5)

I. Teachers find it easy to teach science.

II. There are only four branches of science.

III. Studying one branch of science does not help in learning the next branch.

IV. Memorising the definitions of scientific terms is the essence of teaching science.

V. The students studying science in classes 11 and 12 are not sure about their career.

Shiokara, Japan

Most Japanese food is simple: it sounds delicious, and it is delicious. But how about raw squid mixed with salty, fermented squid belly? This is shiokara, a Japanese staple, and one I used to hate. However, I'm slowly coming around. Once you get used to it and you have it with good conversation, this food takes on a whole new beauty.

Jellyfish, China

This dish can appear challenging to those of us who only associate jellyfish with the scary nature of some species of them. There's also a rubbery texture to jellyfish that some find a little challenging. However, the Chinese know what they're doing with these things. They mix jellyfish into salads, pair it with chicken, stir it through sesame oil...it's all tasty, and it's all low-fat.

Green ants, Australia

You can keep your witchetty foods, as far as I'm concerned: too soft, too many guts. If I'm going for bush food, it's definitely green ants, little insects that are pulled from trees, lightly crushed between your hands, and then eaten. They're lemony, peppery, and delicious. Local producers are even putting them on top of goat's cheeses now, with lemon myrtle, for extra energy. Seriously good.

When you want to make your home secure, you lock the door. When you want to prevent your bike from being stolen, you use a bike lock. When you want to protect your valuable possessions, you keep them in a safe. But what do you do to protect your identity online?

Modern life is fundamentally intertwined with the internet. Nearly every daily task now has the opportunity for online integration, and almost everyone owns multiple devices, including laptops, phones, tablets, smartwatches, smart TVs and many more. The more accounts and devices you have online, the greater the potential is for criminals to access your personal information and take advantage of you.

Online safety is important no matter your age or life stage, but there are particular concerns for certain vulnerable groups like children, teenagers and senior citizens.

When it comes to internet safety, it's best to start with the basics. Here are some tips to guide you as you evaluate your online habits and make small changes to ensure your privacy and security on the internet.

While creating a new password, pay attention to strong password requirements. Use different user IDs or password combinations for different accounts. Make the password more complicated by combining letters, numbers, and special characters and create hard-to-guess passwords and keep them private. Change your passwords quite often. Don't share your passwords with other people. Make sure passwords and password hints are stored securely. Record passwords in an encrypted file on your computer, or select another secure password storage method. Avoid writing them down. Prevent "auto-login", uncheck "Keep me signed in" and "Remember my password" options.

Researchers in the United States and China are exploring how games on mobile phones can be used to teach children the Chinese language. The results may help promote the idea of mobile phones as learning devices, especially in rural areas of China.

Computer scientists from Carnegie Mellon, the University of California, Berkeley, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences developed two mobile learning games inspired by traditional Chinese games that emphasize cooperative playing, songs, and handmade objects. The Chinese language is more complex than most other languages because it uses 6,000 characters, each corresponding to a syllable or word. One game, Multimedia Word, has the player recognize and write a Chinese character correctly, based on hints such as a sketch or photo. A second game, Drumming Stroke, has a group of players practice writing Chinese characters in turns; participants must write one then pass the mobile phone to the next player within the beat of a drum stroke of the character in the correct order, and then pass the mobile phone to the next player within the beat of a drum.

Initially, the games were tested with children in Xin'an China. Later, the testing was done at a private school in Beijing. In both cases the games showed that students could improve their knowledge of Chinese characters.

"We believe that the cooperative learning encouraged by the games contributed to character learning," said Matthew Kam, assistant professor in Carnegie Mellon's School of Computer Science's Human-Computer Interaction Institute and project director. "The results of our studies suggest that further development of these games could make inexpensive mobile phones important learning tools, particularly for children in underdeveloped rural areas."

Despite their small screens and low computing power, Kam said, mobile phones could become a major educational resource as wireless carriers and mobile phone manufacturers extend sales into ever more rural areas of the globe.

Use of mobile phone-based games for teaching English literacy has also been investigated with rural children in India and Kenya.

Tragic Avalanche Strikes Mount Yalung Ri

By Ramesh Thapa

November 4, 2025, Dolakha

A deadly avalanche struck Mount Yalung Ri (5,630m) in Nepal's Dolakha district on November 3, 2025, killing seven climbers and injuring several others. The victims included five foreign mountaineers and two Nepali guides, while at least four Nepali high altitude workers were initially reported missing. Rescue teams, supported by helicopters, rushed to the Rolwaling Range, but heavy snowfall and unstable terrain slowed operations. Survivors described the avalanche as sudden and overwhelming, burying tents and equipment within seconds.

Authorities confirmed the avalanche was part of a wider disaster triggered by cyclone Montha, which swept across the Himalayas between November 1-3, 2025. The storm unleashed multiple avalanches on peaks including Panbari and Yalung Ri, leaving at least nine dead, six injured, and five missing (later found safe). The storm's intensity was unusual for the autumn climbing season, which already poses risks due to shorter summit windows and harsher conditions compared to spring.

Officials and experts warn that climate-driven weather volatility is increasing the danger for Himalayan expeditions. The tragedy underscores the vulnerability of both foreign climbers and Nepali guides, who face mounting hazards as unpredictable storms reshape the risks of high-altitude mountaineering in Nepal.

Dear Sabrina,

Thanks for your letter, and it was my immense pleasure to hear from you. You asked me to tell you about my favourite day of the week. Well, it's definitely Friday.

Why I like Friday is because I have my favourite subjects at school: PE and Chemistry. Chemistry is particularly interesting because it involves practical experiments. Moreover, our chemistry teacher, Mr. King, has a wonderful sense of humour. In PE, we usually play basketball, which is my favourite sport. Since I'm tall and active, I perform well and our team usually achieves success.

On Fridays we have French classes, which I find challenging. But, I enjoy the ICT class after the French class. At the moment, I'm working on designing a webpage for our basketball team. This has helped me to boost my technical and creative skills.

After school, I hang out with my friends, and then in the evening, I play football at the sports centre. On Friday nights, we sometimes go to parties or to watch movies. We can relax a bit on Friday evenings because there's no school on Saturday.

In your next letter, tell me about your favourite day at school.

The Russians are practically no different, and similarities exist regarding using flowers as a token of expressing love and affection. It is always heartwarming to receive flowers. However, flower-gifting in Russia has some unique traditions. Flower etiquette, in Russia is strictly guided by a range of rules depending on the setting. For instance, the kinds of flowers gifted in a romantic setting differ immensely from those gifted when visiting a Russian home. If flowers are gifted outside these rules, it is possible to offend the receiver.

Red carnations are filled with a deep sense of patriotism. The origins of this symbolism reside in the 1917 February Revolution. The Russian Social Democratic Worker's Party of Bolsheviks had produced masses of cardboard pins designed like red carnations. These badges gained widespread popularity and became a symbol of resistance against the Russian Provisional Government.

Contrasting to the victorious symbols of red carnations, white carnations represent bad omens. The washed-out petals are believed to strip holders off good luck and talent. When there is a grey area, it is the referee or umpire's job to decide whether cheating is taking place. However, players can take advantage of this situation because referees aren't perfect and can't see everything. For example, in cricket, if the ball hits a batter's legs, he is out, and most batters know when they are out, they should leave the field immediately. However, few cricketers are sporting. They wait until the umpire tells them to go because they want to stay in the game, and the umpire might not see what happened. This isn't considered cheating.

However, there's no denying that Diego Maradona cheated in the 1986 World Cup quarter-finals between England and Argentina. In that particular match, Maradona infamously scored a goal using his hand. The referee, who missed the incident, awarded the goal, and unsurprisingly, Maradona didn't question the decision. But the game of football, however, isn't always so forgiving of those who bend the rules, as Brazilian player Rivaldo knows. In the 2002 World Cup, he faked an injury during a match. Unlike Maradona, Rivaldo wasn't so lucky; he was caught out and was later fined, proving that the outcomes of such actions are not always in the player's favour.

Sometimes, players might even try to lose on purpose. At the 2012 London Olympics, four women's badminton doubles teams from China, Indonesia and South Korea purposely played badly. They all wanted to lose because it would lead to an easier place in the tournament.

Although none of the players broke any badminton rules, they were all disqualified for their poor sportsmanship.

Where there are games, people will always try different ways to win. But is bending the rules the same as cheating? Or does it just make the game more interesting because sports competitions are not only about physical skills but also about clever strategies?

The gods brought Pelops back to life. As a special present, they gave him a chariot with a team of snow-white horses that could run faster than the wind. "Take these horses," said Zeus to Pelops, "and find yourself a kingdom, for you shall become a great ruler." Pelops thanked the gods and mounted his chariot and galloped down the dusty mountain road and out onto the plain. As he came around a curve, he reined in his horses, for he saw an old man dressed in rags by the side of the road. "Where are you going?" shouted the old man. "I'm off to find a kingdom," Pelops replied. "Then I have an idea for you," said the old man. "I know of a kingdom called Elis, where a beautiful princess lives. Her name is Hippodamia. The man who married the princess will inherit her father's kingdom." "That sounds perfect," said Pelops. "There's just one problem," cautioned the old man. "If you want to marry the princess, you have to run a chariot race against the old king. If you win, you get the princess and the kingdom. If you lose, you get your head chopped off. So far, twelve people have lost." "I won't lose," said Pelops. "My horses can run faster than the wind." "But the king's can run faster than the lighting," warned the old man. Inaugural Nepal Premier League Title

By MyKhel Staff, December 21

Janakpur Bolts clinched the first ever Nepal Premier League after a thumping 5-wicket win over Sudurpaschim Royals in the final at the TU International Stadium in Kirtipur on Saturday.

Lahiru Milantha smashed a 49-ball 87 as Janakpur Bolts made light work of the run chase of 185 against Sudurpaschim Royals. Milantha and skipper Aasif Sheikh (33 off 19 balls) shared a 73 - run stand for the first wicket in seven overs to lay the foundation for a smooth run chase.

One cold evening, a shivering porcupine wandered through the forest searching for a warm place to rest. Eventually, he came upon a small cave where a family of snakes lived, curled together for warmth. Seeing the porcupine trembling, the snake leader felt pity and invited him inside. Gratefully, the porcupine settled among them.

At first, everyone tried to be polite, but the porcupine's sharp quills made it difficult for the snakes to stay comfortable. Each time he moved, his quills pricked their soft scales. The snakes shifted, twisted, and squeezed together to avoid being hurt, but the porcupine kept insisting he couldn't help it. Soon the snakes were aching from the constant jabs.

Finally, the leader gathered his courage and said, "Friend, we welcomed you when you were cold, but your quills are harming us. Would you please leave and find another shelter?" The porcupine refused, claiming he had nowhere else to go. "If you want peace," he said stubbornly, "you'll have to leave yourselves."

The snakes realized they could no longer stay without suffering. Reluctantly, they slithered out into the cold night, abandoning their home. As they search for a new shelter, they learned a hard lesson: some guests, once admitted, are harder to remove than to refuse in the first place.

We have an old saying 'Beauty is only skin deep'. People generally praise, support and award those who look beautiful and attractive. In contrast, the less attractive, shorter, deformed and disable people are generally ill-treated, discriminated, insulted, less paid, less graded, etc.

People with deformities, scars and other physical defects are deprived of good jobs, considerable pay and handsome opportunities. Discrimination is everywhere for all-aged people. Prettier babies are treated better than plain or ugly looking ones. Not only strangers, even the parents love, kiss, talk and play more with their cute babies but give less attention to the plain babies. At schools, attractive children are likely to draw more attention of the teachers and get higher grades on their achievement tests. The reason may be that their good looks win praise, attention and encouragement from teachers. In a 1975 study, teachers were asked to evaluate some students based on their photos. It was found that the students with ugly looks were judged to be slow learners while the others with pretty photo were considered to be smart.

Conventionally people believe that people with good looks are smart. Even these days, outwardly unattractive and ugly people are teased and addressed as witches or monsters in many places. The cinemas and fairy tales seem to have been playing crucial roles in cultivating this kind of attitude. In such stories, the heroes are cast handsome and the heroines beautiful while the villains are ugly and unattractive. People with physical defects, disability, deformities, etc. are often discriminated. They are less privileged and deprived of their birth rights and opportunities and they have to face insult, discrimination, segregation, humiliation and harsh treatment.

We should judge human fellows not on the basis of how they look but on the ground of their knowledge, virtues, vision of life, inner beauty, humanity and their contribution to society. We can take the example of Socrates from the ancient Greece. He was physically very ugly. However, he is always respected for his vision, wisdom and beauty.

They are always adjusting speed, height, and flight path to account for changing winds, their own weight, and storms. In the spring, they retrace their paths back to their summer homes. On our recent trip to the Philippines, we spent a good five days or so in Cebu. Our main motivation for visiting the island was to attend our friend's wedding ceremony. Since we knew that our main priorities were hanging out with our friends and reuniting with a couple of long-lost playmates, we put very little thought into what we should see or do in Cebu.

Our slack attitude totally paid off, though. With nothing planned, we were totally and completely free to do whatever our friends suggested. Laziness pays off! For once!

We stayed at the Shangri-la Mactan Resort, on Mactan Island, which is just a couple of kilometers from Cebu City. The resort is really close to the airport, which was a major plus considering that traffic in the Philippines rivals that of Indonesia.

The resort seems to be the place to stay with young kids, and if you ask my children, it was a veritable paradise on Earth. There were two swimming pools, a water playground, and a beach with almost no surf, perfect for little ones.

I will tell you, though, that this resort is a factory. There are like 1000 beds, and the place is heaving on the weekends. And as with most hospitality institutions of mass production, the food is not good; however, it is one thing to pay top dollar for fresh, delicious, expertly prepared food. But, to pay top dollar for cheap, tepid, pre-ready meals? Well, that's not something I'm willing to do.

I suggest if you stay there, stock up on groceries. And, don't bother with the club lounge upgrade. The lounge is packed the minute the doors open, and the guests dive-bomb the buffet, scavenging morsels of cold, barely palatable food as though it were made of gold most rare.

Blessed nature! You gave birth to me to endure the cruel behaviour of human beings and you awoke the meaning of being me. When I was restless with suffering you became my mother and wiped the tears that seeped from my eyes. The mother who bore me also gave birth to me, even though it was to suffer pain, she fostered me for nine or ten months in her womb and gave birth to me. In this neither she nor I was at fault. It was the fault of fate. Is the definition of disability merely to be born with bodily incapacity? If so, why do they not consider Homer incomplete? Why did the world never consider the Nikolai Otrovskys, the Helen Kellers incomplete? These people were weak in body, just like me. But they wrote history before they departed, they left us a different perspective, they set down the meaning of being human before they passed away.

But me? I was born in a world very different from theirs, born in a different geography. For this reason, I lived a life that was so unequal and low grade that may be only an animal could have lived such a life before. When I achieved awareness, the shoots of consciousness had begun to sprout in me, I think. But even achieving awareness became like a curse. I did not have a voice with which to speak, nor any strength in my legs to walk. Nor was there strength in my hands that I could fill a basket with godavari, makhmali and sunakhari flowers. No, I had nothing of this at all. I was a helpless girl bereft of all these things, whose mind was filled with a longing to run on the hills, but whose feet did not have the strength to support her body. I longed to talk with others, but I had no voice! Because these desires were ones that would never be fulfilled, they fell upon me, wounded.

Hope to see you soon!

After years of eating beans and driving up his debts, Disney finally brought Mickey Mouse to life on film starting in the late 1920 and earned his way back to the top of his industry. But it was not easy. Investors rejected the concept of his famous mouse over 300 times before one accepted it.

Even with the success of Mickey Mouse, Disney still faced challenges in keeping his business afloat. Not only was he overworked, but tensions with his employer, who eventually stole his longtime and best animator from him, led to Disney having a nervous breakdown. After taking some time off with his wife to recover, Disney returned with a bold new idea: He would develop a full-length animation feature, which he would call Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937). It would become a huge success at the box office, yet the films that followed, Pinocchio (1940), Fantasia (1940) and Bambi (1942), would end up being duds.

If Disney didn't already have enough burdens to shoulder, more were on the way. His animators went on strike at the start of World War II and contributed to his mounting debt that ran upwards of four million dollars. After the war was over, his company was slow to rebuild, but during this time, Disney learned to diversify his business by turning to television, despite pressures from the film studios to stay on the big screen. Nobel Prize is any of the prizes (five in number until 1969, when a sixth was added) awarded annually from a fund bequeathed for that purpose by the Swedish inventor and industrialist Alfred Nobel. The Nobel Prizes are widely regarded as the world's most prestigious awards for intellectual achievement.

In his will drafted in 1895, Nobel instructed that most of his fortune be set aside as a fund for the awarding of five annual prizes "to those who, during the preceding year, shall have conferred the greatest benefit on mankind?" These prizes as established by his will are the Nobel Prize for Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Literature and Peace respectively.

The first distribution of the prizes took place on December 10, 1901, the fifth anniversary of Nobel's death. An additional award, in Economic Sciences in memory of Alfred Nobel, was established in 1968 by the Bank of Sweden and was first awarded in 1969. Although not technically a Nobel Prize, it is identified with the award; its winners are announced with the Nobel Prize recipients and the Prize in Economic Sciences is presented at the Nobel Prize Award Ceremony.

After Nobel's death, the Nobel Foundation was set up to carry out the provisions of his will and to administer his funds. In his will, he had stipulated that four different institutions - three Swedish and one Norwegian - should award the prizes. From Stockholm, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences confers the prizes for Physics, Chemistry and Economic Sciences, the Karolinska Institute confers the prize for Physiology or Medicine, and the Swedish Academy confers the prize for Literature.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee based on Oslo, Norway confers the prize for peace. The Nobel Foundation is the legal owner and functional administrator of the funds and serves as the joint administrative body of the price awarding institutions, but it is not concerned with prize deliberations or decisions.

In the late 1600s, the Enlightenment swept through Europe, bringing with it an explosion of invention and innovation. Although separated from Europe by the Atlantic Ocean, Sybilla Masters contributed to this outpouring of innovation. She was the first English colonist to receive a royal patent.

Sybilla Masters was the mistress of a prosperous household in Philadelphia. Still, she made time to play with ideas on how to improve life in the colonies. Sybilla had watched Native women pound corn with a mortar and pestle. Their methods inspired her. Sybilla invented a corn gin that could do the same work with less human effort. In 1712, Sybilla sailed to London to get a patent for her invention. A patent is a document issued by the government that gives a person full rights over their invention.

Because she was a woman who lived under the English practice of dependence on men, Sybilla could not apply for the patent in her own name. Instead, she submitted it in her husband's name. Thankfully, her husband was proud of her work and supportive of her efforts. He insisted that she be listed as the true inventor in the government records. If he had not, her story would be lost to history. After receiving her patent, Sybilla and her husband sold the corn meal that her invention produced. They called this product "Tuscarora Rice." It was similar to the dish that people call "grits" today.

The patent for the corn gin was not the only patent she received in her lifetime! Sybilla also invented a method for weaving palmetto leaves together. She used this method to make hats, bonnets, and furniture. She received a patent from the English government for this method, too. Sybilla was a very creative and productive inventor. Her ingenuity ensured her legacy as the only colonial woman to receive a patent from the English government.

Everyone wants to climb up the ladder of success and be happy and completely satisfied with their lives. This is the greatest desire of human beings. We struggle throughout our lives to fulfill these desires in whatever way possible. But everyone cannot achieve success, and only a few people will be completely successful in fulfilling their desires for happiness, luxury and satisfaction. Success cannot be achieved in a day. It doesn't happen by accident either. It is the sweet result of investing our valuable time with lots of hard work and determination. We should not give up hope while coming up against difficulties, and we have to show great perseverance in the face of each difficulty until our ultimate goal is achieved. Success is never ending and failure is not final.

Success begins with our imagination. Without imagination, we can do nothing towards our success because imagination creates the shape of success which helps us to act upon it. In this sense, we can say that imagination is the engine of life to achieve success. Goals can be achieved only through imagination. So, we must dare to dream bigger if we want to be successful. It is easy to have a big dream, but it is equally difficult to turn it into reality. So, having confidence and working hard at every step of the way towards our dream is much more important than anything else. This is because having a big dream won't make any sense if we do not work hard with good plans to achieve it.

In my opinion, there are three bold steps which are the key to success and the way to be the person we want to be. They are imagination, confidence and hard work with plans. First of all, we have to see our future goal from our current state, and we have to paint it beautifully with different colours through our imagination. Then we have to believe that we can change it into reality with great confidence. Finally, we have to try to reach our goal and fulfill it through hard work with good plans.

Hi Jan,
So nice to hear from you! How are you doing?
It would be great to meet and celebrate with our friends from college. How about meeting in London sometimes next month? We could meet in a pub, have dinner, and then go to a club, like in the old days?
I think that Saturday 20th would work best for everyone: I know that Ruth is on holiday next weekend, and I will be away the following one (on a business trip to Japan, I will tell you more about it when we meet!). If I remember well, you are busy the weekend of the 27th, as you are attending your sister-in-law's wedding, aren't you? Taking all that into account, Saturday 20th looks like the best option. We would have to ask Sean, Mary and Alex if they are available though.
If you want, I could send an email to everyone, to check that we are all free on Saturday 20th, and suggest that we meet in London. I'll tell them about my idea of going to a pub and then to a club, but maybe someone will come up with a better suggestion (Mary always has great ideas!). Then we can talk about hotel bookings, as most of us will have to stay the night, I guess.
I am really looking forward to it, thanks a lot for suggesting it!
See you soon,
Camille

It's really true what people say about English politeness: It's everywhere. When squeezing past someone on a narrow space, people say 'sorry'. When getting off a bus, English passengers say 'thank you' to the driver. In Germany, people would never dream of doing this: bus drivers are just doing their job! I used to think the German way; I was in Britain for a few years. I understood that there were more polite ways of treating people and I began to adopt some of those way too!

When people buy something in a shop, both customer and shop assistant usually thank each other twice or more. In Germany, it would be unusual to hear more than one 'thank you' in such a conversation. British students thank their lectures when leaving the room. English employers thank their employees for doing their jobs, but Germans think that paying their workers money is already thanks enough!

But there is another side to British politeness. One word that comes to mind here is 'artificial'. Although it is enjoyable to talk with friendly people, it has often made me wonder what the English really think. In fact, this confused me during my stay in England. Everyone at the University I attended seemed to like me and people in my class were kind and friendly but I found it hard to understand who my friend was really and who was just being polite.

I must say that British politeness is a little puzzling to me. For example, I often wonder why the English lose it when they drink too much. And then I think: maybe, drinking is good excuse for being rude once in a while. After all, having to be polite all the time can be stressful, right?

A Plastic Ocean is a film that makes you think, and then act. We need to take action on our dependence on plastic. We've been producing plastic in huge quantities since the 1940s. Drink bottles, shopping bags, toiletries, and even clothes are made with plastic. Only a small amount of it is recycled. What happens to all the rest? This is the question the film A Plastic Ocean answers.

The film begins as a journey to film the blue whale. But during the journey, the filmmakers (journalist Craig Leesson and environmental activist Tanya Streeter) make the shocking discovery of a huge, thick layer of plastic floating in the middle of the Indian Ocean. This discovery led them to investigate further. In total, they visited twenty locations around the world during the four years, and they made the film.

The documentary premiered in 2016 after extensive research. There are beautiful shots of the seas and marine life. But these are contrasted with disturbing scenes of pollution. We see how marine species are being killed by all the plastic we are dumping in the ocean. The message about our use of plastic is painfully obvious. We are the cause as well as the solution to the problem.

In the second half, the filmmakers look at what we can do to reverse the tide of plastic flowing around the world. They present short-term and long-term solutions. These include avoiding plastic containers and 'single-use' plastic products as much as possible. Reuse and recycle the plastic bags. The filmmakers also stress the need for governments to work more on recycling and look at how technology is developing that can convert plastic into fuel. The world uses five hundred billion plastic bags annually. Over 300 million tons of plastic are produced every year, and at least eight million tons are dumped into the oceans. These numbers are hard to imagine, but the consequences are real. Once you've seen A Plastic Ocean, you'll realize the time is now to do something.
